Keeping It Real
2022 New Year’s Resolution from Moodify
At Moodify, we’re ruminating on what the New Year might bring and what resolutions we have for 2022. This begs the question, “what is the history of New Year’s resolutions?” So, we did a little research on the subject.
It turns out that the ancient Babylonians are said to have been the first people to make New Year’s resolutions, some 4,000 years ago. They also made promises to the gods to pay their debts and return any objects they had borrowed. These promises could be considered the forerunners of our resolutions. If the Babylonians kept to their word, their (pagan) gods would bestow favor on them for the coming year. If not, they would fall out of the gods’ favor—a place no one wanted to be.
Despite the tradition’s religious roots, New Year’s resolutions today are a mostly secular practice. Instead of making promises to the gods, most people make resolutions only to themselves, and focus purely on self-improvement (which may explain why such resolutions seem so hard to follow through on). According to recent research, while as many as 45 percent of Americans say they usually make New Year’s resolutions, only 8 percent are successful in achieving their goals.

Another Thought on Resolutions
As we start a new year there are multiple resolutions that we apply to our lives. Lose weight, reduce drinking, get more exercise, travel more, pick up a new hobby, spend more time with family… the list goes on.
We would like to offer another thought on resolutions for 2022. These past two years have presented challenges for just about everyone. Be it big or small, it has been a collective struggle.
We talk about empathy, compassion, kindness to each other and honestly, for most of us, that is largely directed towards those in our lives. We would like to offer up the resolution to take a minute and extend empathy, compassion and kindness to those you do not know. It can be as simple as the sign suggests. Make eye contact, say hi and offer a high five of encouragement. We bet more than 8% of you can be successful with this resolution.
It’s been proven that simple acts of kindness make others feel good and they also make us feel good. Oh and don’t forget to eat Moodify Oatmeal! That will make you feel good too!
Happy New Year Friends! from all of us at Moodify Food.
